Air-Intake Steel Substructure Welding and Coating Inspection — Slovakia

PSPP provided independent inspection services for fabricated steel substructures forming part of an industrial air-intake system for a European power-generation project. The assignment included welding inspection, NDT witnessing, dimensional verification, coating inspection and quality-documentation review at a manufacturing facility in Slovakia.

The Challenge

The fabricated steel components were required to meet demanding welding-quality, dimensional and protective-coating requirements before final acceptance. The project involved multiple production stages, extensive welded joints, corrective repairs and progressive inspection of partially completed structural batches.

Scope & Approach

PSPP carried out intermediate and progressive final inspections of structural-steel components manufactured for an industrial air-intake system. The inspection activities included review of fabrication drawings, welding instructions, Welding Procedure Specifications, material certificates, welder qualifications and relevant quality records. Visual inspection was performed on all available welds to assess weld profile, geometry, surface condition and visible imperfections against the applicable drawings and acceptance requirements. Penetrant testing was witnessed on selected fillet, corner and butt welds, including lifting-lug welds, in accordance with the approved Inspection and Test Plan. PSPP also performed spot dimensional checks against approved drawings and reviewed the fabrication condition of the first prepared structural batch. Protective-coating inspection included verification of measurement equipment, visual assessment of coated surfaces and dry-film-thickness measurements at selected locations.

The Outcome

The inspected welds were found acceptable following completion and verification of the required corrective actions. Dimensional spot checks showed no identified deviations, and the reviewed coating-thickness measurements were within the applicable project limits. Remaining activities associated with ongoing production were documented for verification during subsequent inspection stages.
