The Challenge

Transformer tank assemblies require accurate dimensional conformity and sound welded surfaces to ensure correct integration of structural supports, flanges, lifting elements, cooling-system connections and associated accessories. The assignment required verification of multiple fabricated features and examination of external weld areas before the components progressed to subsequent manufacturing stages.

Scope & Approach

PSPP carried out independent inspection activities covering the fabricated tank body and its corresponding cover. Dimensional checks were performed against the applicable manufacturing drawings to verify the position, spacing and general dimensions of key components. The inspected features included the tank base, centring elements, lifting points, stiffeners, access-opening frames, radiator connections, heater-support flanges, transport brackets, tank-to-cover interfaces, cable supports, fan supports, lifting plates and other structural attachments. The cover inspection included verification of turret flanges, lifting elements, stiffeners, access openings, cable supports and equipment connections. PSPP also witnessed and reviewed visible liquid penetrant examination of the external surfaces of the tank and cover. The examination included confirmation of surface preparation, penetrant application, removal and developer application, together with review of penetration and development times and the applicable acceptance criteria. Inspection records and component conformity results were reviewed following completion of the activities.

The Outcome

The inspected tank and cover components were reported as dimensionally compliant with the applicable manufacturing requirements. The liquid penetrant examinations were completed with acceptable results in accordance with the specified acceptance level. The components were accepted for progression to the next stage of manufacture.
